What is MilbeGuard®?
MilbeGuard® is a once-a-month tablet that prevents heartworm disease, controls adult hookworms, and removes and controls adult roundworms and whipworm infections in dogs. For cats, MilbeGuard® protects against heartworm disease and removes adult roundworms and adult hookworms.
How old does my dog or cat have to be in order to start MilbeGuard®?
MilbeGuard® is indicated for dogs and puppies four weeks of age or greater and 2 lbs. pounds body weight or greater. Cats and kittens must be six weeks of age or greater and 1.5 lbs. body weight or greater. Please consult your veterinarian for the right dosage of MilbeGuard® for your dog or puppy and cat or kitten.
How can I purchase MilbeGuard®?
MilbeGuard® is a preventative medication, only available with a prescription from a licensed veterinarian.
Why do I need a prescription in order to purchase MilbeGuard®?
Heartworm prevention products are approved by the FDA and require a prescription obtained through a licensed veterinarian who has a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship with you and your dog or cat. Your veterinarian is your best source of information about what is best for your pet, including whether MilbeGuard® might be the right choice for your dog or cat. Before administering parasite protection such as MilbeGuard®, it is important that your veterinarian assess your pet’s heartworm status. MilbeGuard® is a preventative medication and only available with a valid prescription. Your veterinarian can best advise you on how to use the product safely and effectively.
Does my dog or cat need a heartworm test before starting MilbeGuard®?
It is important for your veterinarian to assess your pet’s heartworm status prior to initiating a monthly heartworm disease preventative or prior to changing from one brand of preventive to another.
If my dog or cat is already on another heartworm preventative, how do I switch them to MilbeGuard®?
Please consult your veterinarian before switching to MilbeGuard®.
Is MilbeGuard® made with real beef?
No. MilbeGuard® is not made with real beef or any other animal byproduct. The beef flavoring comes from a yeast extract.
Can the flavored tablet be broken and given with food?
Most dogs and cats will take the flavored tablet when offered by their owner. However, the tablet may be offered in food or broken for ease of administration. Always watch your pet closely following dosing to ensure that the entire dose has been consumed.
